Brian Weiss: Recalling Past Lives
Increase peace and happiness

As a traditional and noted psychiatrist, Brian L. Weiss, M.D., made headlines with his ground-breaking research on regression therapy. A graduate of Columbia University and Yale Medical School, Dr. Weiss is Chairman Emeritus of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami. He maintains a private practice and currently has a waiting list of over 5,000 patients.

Astonished and skeptical when one of his patients began recalling past-life traumas, he was able to connect with remarkable revelations, cure the patient and embark on a new, more meaningful phase of his own career. In his book, a spellbinding case history substantiating the effectiveness of regression therapy and its healing potential, Many Lives, Many Masters, Dr. Weiss describes the experiences of a patient named Catherine. During a regression session, she recalled a past life dating back 4,000 years. Although skeptical, Dr. Weiss observed his patient was healing. He was further inspired to research regression therapy as a viable means of liberating people from fear, anxiety and other trauma-based conditions. So far, Dr. Weiss has regressed 3,500 patients since Catherine, the patient who opened the doors to a new realm of insight and exploration.

Beyond Meditation
We recently discussed his newest project. His new book, Mirrors of Time: Using Regression for Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Healing (Hay House 2002), allows you to take regression therapy to the next level. "A CD is included at the back of the book," Weiss told me, "and it goes beyond meditation and visualization exercises—it contains the actual regression techniques I use with my patients. Now you can go back through time by remembering past events that may have led to symptoms or difficulties in the present time." Although a doubter myself, I was reassured through our conversation that the mind is a powerful vehicle of transformation. Dr. Weiss explained the process. "Hypnosis is a form of concentration. Your concept of (I) is greater than the physical body. Some refer to it as soul, consciousness, spirit or awareness. In hypnosis, you are able to access this expanded awareness while still maintaining your present perspective with enhanced access to memories and a deeper understanding of yourself and your life. During a past-life regression session you know who you are. It is not time travel. It is a memory through the reference of your current mind. Fears and phobias that translate into physical and emotional symptoms can carry over from previous lives and show up in many forms. For example, someone hanged in a previous life may exhibit severe neck problems. Someone who drowned may fear water. A fall from a pyramid or a castle wall may produce a fear of heights and smoke inhalation as the cause of death in a previous life, may cause asthma in the current life. As with fears and phobias, talents carry over too. We can see that expressed in prodigy children. Regression is effective for two main reasons." Dr. Weiss further explains, "The patient comes to understand the cause of their fear or pain and once regressed, they see life from a larger perspective. People I work with come to realize—we don’t die when our body dies."

Learn Through Relationships
Of course, no discussion with Dr. Weiss would be complete without the relationship conversation and Dr. Weiss suggests the following: "Bring love, compassion, charity and non-violence into all your relationships. This is where we can all heal. We are here to learn through relationships and through our emotions. When you leave a relationship, leave with respect for the soul of the other person. Let go of anger and hate because that’s the hook that causes you to come back. Many souls are connected and you may be in relationship with someone you have been with before. The roles may change but the hook keeps you hooked. If in your heart and mind, you are not hooked, then you have cleared that relationship. You don’t have to accept their behavior and you don’t need the other person to forgive. Just change your mind and heart and you are free."
Contrary to the work that Dr. Weiss facilitates in leading his patients back through time by remembering past events that may have led to difficulties in the present, his true commitment is to increasing peace, joy and happiness in our lives...NOW! Don’t let your past interfere with the blessings in your future. Sometimes...taking a step back gives us the perfect perspective to move forward and live life in balance.

Thoughts to Ponder from Brian L. Weiss M.D.
Life is like a big school and in this school are many lessons.
Our task is to awaken.

We are here to learn about love. This is the energy
from which all of us and all things are made.

We do not die when our bodies die. A part of us goes on.

We're really one people—one energy.

We're all connected. Take your time.

A life with difficult relationships filled with obstacles and losses, presents the most opportunity for the soul's growth.

Come from the heart, the true heart, not the head.

When in doubt, choose the heart.Because the kingdom of heaven really exists within us, all joy and happiness come from within ourselves.
